What Makes a Great Replacement Window?

October 14, 2015 posted In Windows

When it comes time to replace the windows in your home, it’s important to know what you should expect in terms of the value of replacement windows, and what truly sets a great window apart from a not-so-great one.

Durability

A great replacement window is one that will last a long time so you won’t have to replace them again. At Archway, we install vinyl replacement windows because they have proven to stand the test of time. According to a study by the National Association of Homebuilders, vinyl and fiberglass windows are considered more durable than wood and aluminum windows, and may last longer than 30 years if installed correctly.

The vinyl replacement windows we install go a step further than many other window types because they have added features to help them last even longer, such as dual-pane, double-strength glass that not only increases durability, but also strength and insulation. There are also airtight insulating chambers that enhance thermal performance as well as the window’s durability.

Energy Efficiency

A great reason to replace your home’s windows is to improve energy efficiency. You can compare the energy efficiency among window products by reading the labels, but also by making sure your new windows have these components:

Multiple panes – two or three panes will insulate the window better than one

Low-E coating – this is a thin metal material that reflects UV rays and retains heat in the winter and coolness in the summer

Gas fill – windows that are filled with gas like argon or krypton instead of air tend to offer better thermal resistance, which results in better insulation and energy efficiency

Framing materials – if your window is framed with vinyl or fiberglass, the transfer of heat is reduced, making the window more energy efficient

Cost vs. Value

If you are looking to improve your home’s resale value by replacing the windows, make sure you carefully consider all of your options. Replacing your old windows with high-quality, energy efficient ones will be costly, however you can recoup about 60 percent of that cost in terms of improving your home’s overall resale value. You also want to make sure that the windows you choose are long-lasting, as mentioned earlier in the article, so you won’t have to replace them again in a few short years. We have an old saying here at Archway…”when does cheap become expensive?” It’s when you have to keep replacing your windows over and over again.

If it’s time for you to replace your windows, you can rest assured that you’ll be getting the best value of materials for your money with Archway. Please contact us today to schedule your complimentary window replacement consultation!
