A Guide to Choosing Showerheads

November 5, 2015 posted In Bathrooms

There’s nothing better than coming home after a long day and relaxing in a steaming hot shower. It’s the one place that allows you privacy, comfort, and luxury right in your own home. Having a great showerhead can make the experience even more luxurious. Here’s a look at the different types of showerheads that are available today that could be incorporated into your bathroom remodel.

Showerhead Style Options

Single-Head Spray Showerheads

These are the most standard showerheads…the familiar spherical, adjustable nozzles that have been around for decades. These showerheads usually have a lever on the side that allows you to adjust the flow of the water.

Rain Showerheads

These large, flat showerheads are suspended directly in the middle of the ceiling above the shower, so that it “rains” down on the user. This has become a very popular style of showerhead over the past few years because of its sleek design and the luxurious experience it provides.

Dual and Multiple Showerheads

multiple showerhead

This is when one or more showerheads are installed but are controlled by a single set of controls or handles. Typically, you will see this configured as a fixed, wall-mounted showerhead with a hand-held component. Some installations of dual showerheads have a diverter valve that allows the user to either showerhead separately or simultaneously.

Hand-held Showerheads

handheld showerhead

This is a single head sprayer that is attached to a flexible hose, making it easy to wash hair or get to hard-to-reach places. These types of showerheads are perfect for those with limited mobility or who may shower in a seated position.

Body Sprays

Body sprays are installed into the shower wall and have multiple heads that are either compact nozzles or are flat and flush to the surface of the wall. These are very luxurious and have also been gaining popularity over the last few years. Keep in mind that these are quite pricey and you will need special configuration to make them work correctly in your shower.

Finishes

Showerheads some in many different styles and finishes…the most popular being either brushed nickel or polished chrome (see photos below). They also come in stainless steel, bronze, brass, gold, black, and white. To make sure all of your showerheads and fixtures look the same, make sure you order everything from the same manufacturer.

Luxury Shower Features

Steam Showers

Steam showers are powered by a generator that turns water into steam, and then pipes the steam into the shower enclosure, basically creating an in-home sauna. This can be retrofitted into existing bathrooms or ordered for new construction. They come as complete pre-fabricated shower units with special doors that help seal in the steam, or as separate components that can be installed in a custom shower stall. Steam shower units have many different features themselves, and can be pretty pricey. A unit will cost you anywhere between $3,000 and $7,000.

Digital Controls

If you’re looking for a multi-sensory shower experience, you can install digital controls and program them to regulate water flow intensity along with lighting and music.  You’ll need to add a thermostatic valve and media server and have a digital wiring professional hook up your master control panel. The price for a digital shower control kit is around $1600.
